Active vs Passive Defense Strategies

Advanced
Defence

Active defense attempts to establish tricks quickly before declarer can discard. Passive defense avoids giving away tricks, waiting for declarer to fail.

Defenders must constantly toggle between Active and Passive Defense. An active defense involves leading away from Honours (like K-J-x) to establish tricks quickly. A passive defense involves leading top of nothing or safe sequences to avoid gifting declarer free tricks.

Why the strategy shifts

If the opponents bid to a game contract (like 4♠) based on a strong side suit, you must defend actively. If you sit back, declarer will draw trumps, run the side suit, and discard their losers. You must aggressively cash your tricks or set them up immediately.

Against a struggling partscore (like 1NT or 2♥), declarer lacks the power to discard losers quickly. Active defense often hands them the exact tricks they need. Passive defense starves them.

A worked example: Going passive

Opponents bid 1NT – 2NT – Pass.

Caption: The opponents struggled to 2NT and stopped. Declarer has at most 24 combined points. Do not lead away from a King! Lead top of a worthless sequence (like the 9 from 9-8-4). Let declarer break open the tough suits. They will likely fail to find 8 tricks if you don't help them.

Four common mistakes

  • Defending passively against a slam, allowing declarer to dictate the entire hand.
  • Defending actively against 1NT, routinely gifting declarer their 7th trick.
  • Shifting suits randomly instead of sticking to the agreed active/passive plan.
  • Failing to recognize when dummy's strong side suit demands an immediate active attack.

When the rule does not apply

If partner has doubled a conventional bid (like Stayman) or made a lead-directing bid, you must lead that suit actively, regardless of the contract level.

Key takeaways

  • Active defense: Attack to establish tricks before declarer discards.
  • Passive defense: Lead safe, worthless cards and wait.
  • Use active defense against slams and strong suit games.
  • Use passive defense against partscores.
