What is the DONT Convention over 1NT?
DONT (Disturbing Opponents' No-Trump) is a competitive bidding system that allows you to safely enter the auction over a 1NT opening with one or two long suits.
A 1NT opening bid is highly descriptive and difficult to defend against because it quickly establishes a partnership's strength and shape. DONT (Disturbing Opponents' No-Trump) is a convention designed to safely disrupt 1NT openings. It provides a structured way to show single-suited hands (by doubling first) and two-suited hands (by bidding the lower of the two suits), keeping the auction safely at the 2-level.
Why DONT works
If you overcall a natural 2♠ over a 1NT opening, you might get doubled for a massive penalty if partner is weak. DONT mitigates this risk by keeping ambiguity in the auction until a fit is found.
The DONT structure is:
- Double: A single-suited hand (any suit, usually 6+ cards). Partner is forced to relay to 2♣, and you correct to your actual suit.
- 2♣: Clubs and a higher suit (5-4 shape or better).
- 2♦: Diamonds and a Major.
- 2♥: Hearts and Spades.
- 2♠: Spades (A natural bid, weaker than doubling and correcting to Spades).
A worked example: Showing two suits
Opponent opens 1NT (15-17).
Your Hand (Overcaller):
♠ 5
♥ 8 3
♦ K Q J 9 5
♣ A 10 8 5 2
(10 HCP, 5 Diamonds, 5 Clubs)
The Auction:
- Opponent: 1NT
- You: 2♣ (DONT: Clubs and a higher suit)
- Opponent: Pass
- Partner: Pass
Caption: You bid 2♣ to show Clubs and a higher-ranking suit (Diamonds, Hearts, or Spades). Partner looks at their hand, sees they have 4 Clubs, and happily passes! You have found a safe 9-card fit at the 2-level, completely disrupting the opponents' No-Trump plans.
Four common mistakes
- Partner passing a DONT Double (The double is artificial and forcing! Partner must bid 2♣).
- Partner "guessing" the second suit too early instead of letting the overcaller pass or correct.
- Using DONT with flat, balanced hands just to be annoying (you need shape to survive the 2-level).
- Forgetting that a direct 2♠ bid is weaker than Doubling and then bidding 2♠.
When the rule does not apply
DONT is highly effective against Strong 1NT openings (15-17). However, against Weak 1NT openings (12-14), many experts prefer to abandon DONT and play a standard Penalty Double to punish the opponents for opening light.
Key takeaways
- DONT = Disturbing Opponents' No-Trump.
- Double shows one long suit (partner must bid 2♣).
- Suit bids show that suit plus a higher-ranking suit.
- Keeps interference low and safe to find a fit.
