Doubling Part-Scores at Pairs
At pairs, +200 beats every part-score your side could make. When the opponents are vulnerable and stretching, a penalty double can be a top.
At pairs, the best part-score you can make is usually +110 to +140. Beating a vulnerable contract by one trick doubled gives +200, more than any part-score. That number explains a lot of matchpoint doubling.
The magic +200
The opponents, vulnerable, compete to 3♦ over your 2♠. You could make 2♠ for +110 or 3♠ for +140. If 3♦ goes one down:
Undoubled: +100. Worse than your part-score.
Doubled: +200. Better than any part-score you could make.
Not vulnerable, one down doubled is only +100, so you need two down (+300) to beat your own part-score clearly.
When a penalty double is attractive
The opponents are vulnerable and have stretched to the three level.
You have trumps behind declarer, for example Q 10 x or better in their suit.
Your side has the balance of points, and partner has shown values.
Your own fit is short, so you would struggle to make much yourselves.
When not to double
The doubled contract is a game if it makes. 2♥ doubled and made is worth 670 to them vulnerable, or 470 not vulnerable. That's a bottom.
Your values are in your own long suit rather than in theirs.
You only have points, not trump tricks. Points without trumps often let declarer get home.
Partnership agreement
Agree whether low-level doubles in these auctions are for penalty or for take-out. Many pairs play competitive doubles here, so check your agreements.
Key takeaways
At pairs, +200 beats every part-score.
Double vulnerable opponents who stretch when you hold trumps.
Don't double them into game.
