How to Execute an Elimination and Throw-in Play
Strip side suits from both hands, draw trumps, and throw a defender on lead to force a gift trick.
An Elimination and Throw-in Play (also known as a strip-and-endplay) is an advanced declarer technique where you systematically strip (eliminate) all safe exit cards from the defenders' hands and draw trumps before deliberately losing a trick (throwing in) to a specific defender. Forced onto the lead with no safe cards to return, the defender must either lead into your isolated honour combination or yield a sluff-and-ruff.
Why the Elimination and Throw-in Play works
Defenders are trapped when they hold the lead without safe exit cards. If you eliminate side suits from both your hand and dummy first, any card the thrown-in defender plays grants your partnership a trick.
A return into your honour combination gives you a free finesse, while a return in an eliminated suit allows you to ruff in dummy while discarding a loser from declarer's hand (a sluff-and-ruff).
A worked example: Throwing in West to avoid a finesse
You are declaring 4♠.
Dummy (North):
♠ A K 4
♥ 3 2
♦ A K 4
♣ Q J 10
Declarer (South):
♠ Q J 10 9 2
♥ A 4
♦ 6 5 2
♣ A 2
Play Sequence:
1. Draw trumps (3 rounds ending in hand).
2. Cash the ♦A, ♦K, ♥A, and lose a Heart (Elimination).
3. Play the ♣A, then play a Club to dummy's ♣Q, losing to West's ♣K (Throw-in!).
*Caption:* West wins the ♣K but is trapped. West holds no Diamonds or Hearts. If West leads a Heart or Diamond, you ruff in dummy and pitch a losing card from hand. If West leads a Club, it leads straight into dummy's ♣J-10.
Four common mistakes
- Executing the throw-in trick before completely stripping safe exit suits from both hand and dummy.
- Throwing in the wrong defender who still holds safe exit cards.
- Forgetting to draw outstanding defender trumps before starting the elimination.
- Miscounting the defender's remaining suit holdings.
When the rule does not apply
An Elimination and Throw-in cannot be executed if the defenders hold safe exit cards in an un-eliminated side suit, or if the thrown-in defender can lead a trump to prevent you from taking a sluff-and-ruff.
Key takeaways
- Draw trumps and eliminate side suits from both hands first.
- Throw a specific defender on lead using a losing card.
- Forces defender to concede a free finesse or a sluff-and-ruff.
- Eliminates guessing on tight contracts.
