How to Establish a Long Suit in No-Trump Contracts
Drive out opponents' stoppers early so your low suit cards become winners before defenders take control.
Suit establishment in No-Trump contracts means systematically leading a long suit (holding 5 or more cards combined) to force out the opponents' high stoppers until all missing cards in that suit are played. Once the opponents run out of cards in your long suit, your remaining low cards become winning tricks. You must drive out defenders' stoppers at the very start of the hand.
Why establishing long suits works in No-Trump
In No-Trump contracts, there is no trump suit to stop high cards. Every card played in a suit follows standard rank order.
When you hold a six-card suit in dummy and drive out the opponents' Ace and King, the opponents hold no cards left in that suit. A small 2 or 3 in dummy will win a trick because no opponent can follow suit, giving you multiple low-card tricks.
A worked example: Driving out stoppers in Spades
You are declaring 3NT.
