High-Level Penalty Doubles

Competitive bidding
Advanced

High-level doubles depend on the auction and partnership agreements. Doubling a sacrifice after your side bids game is often penalty-oriented; level alone does not decide the meaning.

High-level doubles need judgement and clear partnership agreements. A double of an opponents’ sacrifice after your side has bid game is often penalty-oriented, but doubles at the four-level are not automatically penalties.

What determines the meaning?

  • The auction: has your side established a fit and bid game, or are you facing an opening pre-empt?
  • Your agreements: many partnerships play takeout doubles through 4♥; others use different limits or cooperative doubles.
  • Your hand: defensive tricks and trump strength favour defending; exceptional shape may favour bidding on.

A double of an opening 4♥ is commonly takeout, whereas a double of 4♠ after your side has bid 4♥ is often penalty-oriented. Agree these situations before playing.

A worked example: Assessing a sacrifice

The auction:

  • You: 1♥
  • LHO: Pass
  • Partner: 4♥
  • RHO: 4♠
  • You: Double

Your hand:
♠ A K 5
♥ K Q J 10 4
♦ A 8 2
♣ 7 3
17 HCP.

You hold ♠A-K and the ♦A, giving useful defensive prospects against 4♠. If your agreement treats this double as penalty-oriented, it asks partner to defend rather than bid on. These cards do not guarantee a set: consider the full auction and vulnerability, and compare the likely penalty with your own game score.

Four common mistakes

  • Assuming every four-level double is for penalties.
  • Pulling a clearly agreed penalty double simply because your hand is weak.
  • Counting side-suit aces as guaranteed winners when the opponents may be short in those suits.
  • Doubling a sacrifice without comparing vulnerability, the likely penalty and your own available score.

When the rule does not apply

Doubles of opening pre-empts may be takeout under your agreements. Some competitive auctions use cooperative doubles, inviting partner’s judgement. Slam conventions such as DOPI can give doubles an artificial meaning. Level alone is never a substitute for the auction and your agreed methods.

Key takeaways

  • Establish the meaning of high-level doubles with partner.
  • After your side bids game, a double of a sacrifice is often penalty-oriented.
  • Assess trump strength, defensive prospects and vulnerability.
  • Compare defending with bidding on; neither a set nor a large penalty is guaranteed.
