How to Use RKCB 1430 in Slam Bidding
Standard Blackwood leaves you guessing about the trump king and queen. RKCB 1430 solves this by treating the trump king as a fifth ace.
Roman Key Card Blackwood 1430 (RKCB) is an advanced slam-bidding convention that treats five cards as "Key Cards": the four Aces plus the King of the agreed trump suit. When a suit fit is established, a bid of 4NT asks partner how many Key Cards they hold. The responses are 5♣ (1 or 4 Key Cards), 5♦ (0 or 3 Key Cards), 5♥ (2 Key Cards without the Trump Queen), and 5♠ (2 Key Cards with the Trump Queen).
Why RKCB 1430 works
Traditional Blackwood asks only for Aces. However, many slams fail not because the partnership lacks Aces, but because they are missing the King or Queen of the trump suit, leading to catastrophic trump losers.
RKCB 1430 solves this by incorporating the Trump King into the Ace count and dedicated responses to reveal the Trump Queen. The name "1430" is a memory aid for the responses: 1 or 4 Key Cards = 5♣; 3 or 0 Key Cards = 5♦.
A worked example: Reaching a safe 6♥ slam
You and partner have agreed Hearts as the trump suit.
Opener (South):
♠ A K 3
♥ K Q 10 8 4
♦ A J 2
♣ K 2
(19 HCP)
Responder (North):
♠ Q 4 2
♥ A J 9 3 2
♦ K Q 3
♣ 5 4
(12 HCP)
The Auction:
- South: 1♥
- North: 3♥ (Limit raise showing 10–12 HCP with 4+ trump support)
- South: 4NT (RKCB 1430)
- North: 5♣ (Shows 1 or 4 Key Cards)
- South: 6♥
- All Pass
South bids 4NT to ask for Key Cards. North's 5♣ bid shows 1 Key Card (the ♥A). South calculates that the partnership holds 4 of the 5 Key Cards (♠A, ♠K, ♥K, ♥A) and bids 6♥ safely.
Four common mistakes
- Confusing the responses: remembering 5♣ as 0/3 instead of 1/4 (remember the phrase "1430").
- Counting the King of a side suit as a Key Card (only the King of the agreed trump suit counts as a Key Card).
- Bidding 4NT RKCB when your hand contains two quick, unsupported losers in an unbid suit.
- Forgetting that the Trump Queen response (5♥/5♠) requires exactly two Key Cards.
When the rule does not apply
Do not use 4NT RKCB if your agreed trump suit is Clubs, as a 5♣ response would be below 4NT. Furthermore, if your hand contains a void, consider using Splinter bids or Control Cue Bids to show shortness before jumping to 4NT.
Key takeaways
- The 5 Key Cards are the 4 Aces plus the King of the agreed trump suit.
- Response structure: 5♣ = 1 or 4 Key Cards; 5♦ = 0 or 3 Key Cards.
- 5♥ = 2 Key Cards without the Trump Queen; 5♠ = 2 Key Cards with the Trump Queen.
- Never bid a slam if your partnership is missing two Key Cards.
