What is the Michaels Cue Bid in Competitive Auctions?

Competitive bidding
Improver

Cue bidding the opponent's opened suit shows a 5-5 two-suited hand in one call, taking away bidding space.

A Michaels Cue Bid is an immediate direct overcall in the opponent's opened suit (for example, bidding 2♦ after an opponent opens 1♦). It shows a distributional hand with at least 5-5 length in two other suits.

  • Over an opponent's 1♣ or 1♦ opening: 2♣ or 2♦ shows 5+ Spades and 5+ Hearts (both Majors).
  • Over an opponent's 1♥ or 1♠ opening: 2♥ or 2♠ shows 5 cards in the unbid Major PLUS 5 cards in an unknown Minor suit.

Why the Michaels Cue Bid works

Describing 10 cards across two suits in a single bid applies extreme pressure to opponents. It deprives opponents of two entire levels of bidding room while locating major-suit fits with partner immediately.

Michaels eliminates guessing. Instead of bidding one suit and hoping you get a chance to bid the second suit later, Michaels describes your entire hand shape in one turn.

A worked example: Bidding Michaels over 1 Diamond

Your right-hand opponent opens 1♦.

Your Hand (Overcaller):

♠ K Q J 8 4

♥ A J 9 7 2

♦ 3

♣ 8 4

(11 HCP, 5 Spades and 5 Hearts)

The Auction:

  • RHO: 1♦
  • You: 2♦ (Michaels Cue Bid!)
  • LHO: Pass
  • Partner: 3♠
  • All Pass

*Caption:* Bidding 2♦ over 1♦ is a Michaels Cue Bid promising 5+ Spades and 5+ Hearts. Partner holds three Spades and jumps to 3♠ to win the competitive contract.

Four common mistakes

  • Bidding Michaels with 5-4 suit distribution (Michaels MUST promise 5-5 or longer).
  • Using Michaels on flat, balanced hands with weak suit quality.
  • Partner passing a Michaels Cue Bid (partner MUST pick one of opener's promised suits!).
  • Forgetting which two suits are promised when opponent opens 1 of a major.

When the rule does not apply

Do not use a Michaels Cue Bid if your hand contains 16 or more High Card Points; with strong hands, bid your suits naturally or start with a Takeout Double first to avoid misdescribing your point strength.

Key takeaways

  • Overcall in opponent's opened suit = Michaels Cue Bid.
  • Promises 5-5 or longer in two unbid suits.
  • Over 1 Minor = Promises 5-5 in both Majors (Hearts and Spades).
  • Forces fast competitive choices for your partnership.
