How to Bid Preemptively at the 3-Level
Open 3♣, 3♦, 3♥, or 3♠ with a good 7-card suit and 5–9 High Card Points to steal opponent bidding space.
A 3-level opening bid (3♣, 3♦, 3♥, or 3♠) is a Preempt showing a good seven-card suit and 5 to 9 High Card Points (HCP). High Card Points rate hand strength by assigning 4 points to an Ace, 3 to a King, 2 to a Queen, and 1 to a Jack. Opening at the 3-level immediately describes your hand length and point count while stripping opponents of three entire levels of bidding room.
Why 3-level preempts work
Opponents holding opening values need low-level bidding space to exchange information and find their optimal game or slam contract.
When you open at the 3-level, opponents are forced to make decisions at the 3 or 4-level without prior communication. They must guess whether to pass, overcall, or double, resulting in frequent bidding mistakes.
A worked example: Preempting with 7 Spades
You open the bidding in first position.
Your Hand (South):
♠ Q J 10 9 7 4 2
♥ 8 3
♦ 6 2
♣ 9 4
(6 HCP, seven Spades)
The Auction:
- You (South): 3♠
- West (Opponent): Pass
- Partner (North): Pass
- East (Opponent): Pass
*Caption:* Open 3♠ directly in first seat. You hold 7 Spades and 6 HCP. Opponents hold 26 combined HCP but cannot safely enter the auction at the 4-level, allowing you to buy the deal in 3♠.
Four common mistakes
- Preempting at the 3-level with a six-card suit (use a Weak Two bid instead).
- Preempting with 12 or more High Card Points (open 1 of your suit instead).
- Preempting with a weak, broken seven-card suit (e.g., 9-7-5-4-3-2-1).
- Preempting with two side Aces.
When the rule does not apply
Do not open a 3-level preempt in 4th seat (after three passes). In 4th position, passing out the board scores 0, whereas opening a weak preempt risks going down for a negative score.
Key takeaways
- 3-level opening = Good 7-card suit + 5–9 High Card Points.
- Deprives opponents of 3 levels of bidding room.
- Defines hand length and strength in a single call.
- Never preempt at the 3-level in 4th seat.
