What is a Responsive Double?

Competitive bidding
Advanced

When partner makes a takeout double and RHO raises the opener's suit, a Responsive Double shows competing values and length in the two unbid suits.

A Responsive Double is a competitive bidding tool used when your partner makes a Takeout Double, but the opponent on your right aggressively raises their partner's opening suit. Rather than guessing which of the remaining suits partner prefers, doubling in this seat acts as a "responsive" takeout request, asking partner to choose between the two unbid suits.

Why Responsive Doubles work

Imagine the auction: 1♥ – Double – 2♥. You hold exactly 4 Spades and 4 Diamonds with 8 points.

If you unilaterally guess to bid 2♠, partner might hold only 3 Spades but 5 Diamonds, meaning you just missed a superior fit. If you bid 3♦, you force the auction a level higher and might miss a 4-4 Spade fit. The Responsive Double allows you to say, "Partner, I have enough points to compete, and I have 4-4 in the unbid suits. You pick the best fit."

A worked example: Keeping options open

LHO opens 1♥, partner Doubles, RHO raises to 2♥.

Your Hand (Advancer):

♠ K J 8 4

♥ 7 3

♦ A 9 5 2

♣ 8 6 4

(8 HCP, 4 Spades, 4 Diamonds)

The Auction:

  • West: 1♥
  • North: Double
  • East: 2♥
  • South: Double (Responsive)

Caption: You have 8 points, perfectly distributed across the unbid Major and an unbid minor. Bidding 2♠ might be wrong if partner is 3-5 in Spades and Diamonds. By making a Responsive Double, partner will confidently bid 2♠ if they have 4 Spades, or 3♦ if their Diamonds are longer.

Four common mistakes

  • Using a Responsive Double when holding a 5-card major (just bid the 5-card suit directly!).
  • Partner passing the Responsive Double (it is for takeout, not penalties!).
  • Using it with fewer than 6 points (you must have enough strength to survive at the 2-level or 3-level).
  • Forgetting that Responsive Doubles generally only apply when the opponents have bid and raised the same suit.

When the rule does not apply

If the opponents bid two different suits (e.g., 1♥ – Double – 1♠), a double by you is usually not "responsive." Depending on partnership agreement, it may be a standard penalty double or show values without a clear direction. Responsive doubles are specifically for when the opponents raise their own suit.

Key takeaways

  • Used after: 1X – Double – 2X.
  • Shows competing values (typically 6–9 points at the 2-level).
  • Guarantees 4-4 in the two unbid suits (usually both minors or a major/minor).
  • Asks the takeout doubler to choose the final suit.
