When to Ruff in the Short Hand

Declarer play
Beginner

Ruffing in the hand with fewer trumps creates extra tricks. Ruffing in the long trump hand creates zero extra tricks.

Ruffing (trumping) side-suit losers in the "short trump hand"—which is usually dummy, where your partnership holds fewer trumps—increases your total trick count. Conversely, ruffing losers in the "long trump hand" (declarer's hand) yields zero additional tricks. To gain extra tricks, you must ruff side-suit losers in dummy before drawing trumps.

Why short-hand ruffing works

Your long trump suit already guarantees a fixed number of tricks. For example, if declarer holds five trumps headed by the A-K-Q-J-10, those five trumps will win five tricks automatically once trumps are drawn.

If you ruff a loser using one of declarer's five trumps, you reduce declarer's trump holding to four, yielding the same five total tricks.

However, if dummy holds three small trumps and you use one of dummy's trumps to ruff a losing Diamond, that ruff generates a 6th trump trick that did not exist before.

A worked example: Creating extra tricks in dummy

You are declaring 4♠.

Dummy (North - Short Trump Hand):

♠ 8 4 2 *(3 trumps)*

♦ 3 *(Singleton Diamond)*

Declarer (South - Long Trump Hand):

♠ A K Q J 5 *(5 trumps)*

♦ 8 6 4 *(3 losing Diamonds)*

*Play:* If you draw trumps immediately, you win 5 Spade tricks. But if you win the opening lead and immediately ruff two losing Diamonds in dummy using dummy's ♠8 and ♠4, you win 2 ruffs in dummy PLUS declarer's 5 Spade tricks = 7 total trump tricks.

Four common mistakes

  • Drawing trumps prematurely before ruffing side-suit losers in dummy.
  • Ruffing losers in declarer's hand and wondering why your total trick count failed to increase.
  • Losing control of the hand by over-ruffing when defenders hold higher trumps.
  • Forgetting to check if dummy holds enough entries to set up the short-hand ruffs.

When the rule does not apply

If you are playing a "Crossruff" line of play—where you hold short suits in both hands—you should alternate ruffing losers back and forth in both hands repeatedly without drawing trumps.

Key takeaways

  • Ruffing in the short trump hand creates extra winning tricks.
  • Ruffing in the long trump hand yields zero additional tricks.
  • Complete all short-hand ruffs in dummy BEFORE drawing trumps.
  • Count your total tricks before deciding whether to draw trumps.
