How to Use the Sandwich 1NT Overcall

Competitive bidding
Advanced

When both opponents bid a suit and you bid 1NT in the 'sandwich' seat, it is not a strong natural bid. It is a takeout bid showing the other two suits.

A Sandwich 1NT Overcall occurs when your left-hand opponent opens the bidding, partner passes, right-hand opponent responds, and you bid 1NT (e.g., 1♥ – Pass – 1♠ – 1NT). Sitting in the "sandwich" position between two bidding opponents, a 1NT call is completely artificial. It shows a weak hand (usually 5–10 points) with at least 5-5 distribution in the two unbid suits.

Why the Sandwich 1NT works

When both opponents have bid a suit, they hold the majority of the high card points. If you hold a genuine strong balanced hand (15-17 points), it is extremely dangerous to bid 1NT, as you are surrounded by strength and likely to be doubled for a massive penalty.

Instead, the 1NT bid is repurposed to describe a highly distributional hand. By showing 5-5 in the unbid suits, you allow partner to safely choose their preferred suit at the 2-level, instantly finding a fit and preempting the opponents.

A worked example: Bidding the unbid minors

LHO opens 1♥, partner passes, RHO bids 1♠.

Your Hand (South):

♠ 4

♥ 7 3

♦ K J 9 5 2

♣ A Q 10 6 4

(9 HCP, 5 Clubs, 5 Diamonds)

The Auction:

  • West (LHO): 1♥
  • North (Partner): Pass
  • East (RHO): 1♠
  • South (You): 1NT (Sandwich)

Caption: You have weak high cards but extreme shape in the unbid suits (the minors). Bidding 1NT tells partner to pick their longest minor. If partner bids 2♣, you pass and play there safely.

Four common mistakes

  • Bidding a Sandwich 1NT with a strong 16-point balanced hand (start with a Takeout Double instead).
  • Using the bid with only 4-4 shape in the unbid suits (you need 5-5 shape to guarantee a safe landing spot).
  • Partner forgetting the convention and passing the 1NT bid!
  • Bidding it when vulnerable against non-vulnerable opponents with a terrible hand.

When the rule does not apply

If partner has already acted in the auction (e.g., by overcalling), a 1NT bid by you is natural. The Sandwich 1NT strictly applies when partner has passed and both opponents have bid.

Key takeaways

  • Used after 1X – Pass – 1Y.
  • Shows 5-10 points and 5-5 length in the unbid suits.
  • Asks partner to pick their longer suit.
  • Replaces the dangerous natural 1NT overcall in this seat.
