What is a Takeout Double and When Should You Bid It?

Competitive bidding
Beginner

A double of an opponent's 1-level suit opening isn't for penalty—it commands partner to choose their best unbid suit.

A Takeout Double is an artificial double made immediately after an opponent opens the bidding at the 1-level in a suit. It shows opening-hand strength (12 or more High Card Points) with support (at least 3 cards, ideally 4) for all unbid suits, and shortness (at most 2 cards) in the opponent's opened suit. A takeout double forces your partner to bid their longest unbid suit.

Why the Takeout Double works

When opponents open the bidding, they take away valuable bidding space. Bidding a new suit directly requires a five-card suit.

A takeout double solves this problem when you hold a strong hand without a single five-card suit. Instead of guessing which suit partner holds, double acts as a multi-suit enquiry. It tells partner: "I have opening values and can support any suit you choose. Pick your best suit!"

A worked example: Doubling an opponent's 1 Diamond opening

Your right-hand opponent opens 1♦.

Your Hand (Overcaller):
♠ K Q 9 4
♥ A J 8 2
♦ 6 3
♣ A 8 5
(13 HCP, short Diamonds, 4-4-3 support for unbid suits)

The Auction:

  • RHO: 1♦
  • You: Double (Takeout)
  • LHO: Pass
  • Partner: 1♠
  • All Pass

Holding 13 HCP, two small Diamonds, four Spades, four Hearts, and three Clubs, double 1♦. Partner bids 1♠, locating your 4-4 major suit fit immediately.

Four common mistakes

  • Doubling without holding at least three cards in every unbid suit.
  • Doubling with a long, self-sufficient suit of your own (bid your suit naturally instead).
  • Partner passing a takeout double with a weak hand (partner MUST bid even with 0 points!)
  • Doubling with fewer than 12 High Card Points.

When the rule does not apply

Do not use a takeout double if the opponent opens 1NT; doubles over 1NT are usually played as penalty doubles showing 16+ HCP. Additionally, if partner has already opened or responded during the auction, subsequent doubles carry different conventional meanings (such as Penalty or Negative doubles).

Key takeaways

  • Double of a 1-level suit opening = Takeout Double.
  • Promises 12+ HCP and support (3+ cards) for all unbid suits.
  • Requires shortness (0–2 cards) in opponent's opened suit.
  • Partner MUST bid unless an opponent intervenes.
