Handling 4-4 vs 5-3 Fits

A common dilemma arises when a partnership holds two different 8-card fits: one suit breaks 5-3, and the other breaks 4-4. The golden rule of bridge is: Always choose the 4-4 fit as the trump suit.

Why the 4-4 fit is superior

Both fits contain 8 trumps. However, if you make the 5-3 suit trumps, you have a 4-4 side suit. A 4-4 side suit will only yield 4 tricks if it divides perfectly.

If you make the 4-4 suit trumps, your side suit is the 5-3 suit. After drawing trumps with your 4-4 fit, you can play the 5-card side suit. Once the opponents' cards are exhausted, the 4th and 5th cards of that side suit become master winners! You can use them to discard losers from the opposite hand, routinely yielding an extra trick.
