Responding to Weak Two Openings

When partner opens a Weak Two (e.g., 2♥), they describe a six-card suit and roughly 5–9 points. Because partner's hand is weak and highly descriptive, responder is the "captain" of the auction. To manage this safely, most partnerships play RONF (Raise Only Non-Forcing).

How RONF and 2NT work

Under RONF agreements:

• Raises are preemptive: A raise (e.g., 2♥ – 3♥) is not invitational. It extends the preempt to block the opponents. Partner must pass.
• New suits are forcing: Bidding a new suit below game forces opener to bid again, usually showing a strong 5+ card suit of your own.
• 2NT is an artificial relay: If you have a strong hand and want to explore game, bid 2NT to ask opener more about their hand.

A worked example: The 2NT Ask

The Auction:

• Partner: 2♠
• You: 2NT

Your 2NT asks opener for more information. Depending on your agreed system, opener might show a "feature" (an outside Ace or King in a maximum hand) or use the Ogust convention to describe their point range and suit quality. If opener shows a minimum with no outside entries, you can safely sign off in 3♠.

Four common mistakes

• Passing a new suit response from partner (under RONF, it is forcing!).
• Jumping to game with a misfit just because you hold 15 points (game is unlikely opposite a weak hand without a fit).
• Opener bidding a feature when holding a bare minimum (bid your suit again to warn partner).
• Raising partner's suit with an invitational hand (raises are strictly preemptive, not invitational).

When the rule does not apply

If the opponents overcall partner's Weak Two, 2NT is often no longer available as an ask, and bids take the competitive meanings agreed by your partnership. After a double, many pairs keep 2NT as an ask, so agree what applies.
